When you’re accustomed to living an active lifestyle, the last thing you want is to be sidelined from your life because of orthopedic pain. Orthobiologics and regenerative medicine has been an emerging field in orthopedic and sports medicine that provides alternative treatments for musculoskeletal conditions. It uses natural substances to speed the healing of orthopedic injuries and diseases. Our team can let you know how this approach could affect your condition.
I had been dealing with hip pain for several months. I was expecting to be told that I needed hip replacement, but Dr. Negaard instead found another diagnosis. Between physical therapy and the PRP injection, I’m pain-free and enjoying the rest of my retirement.
Thanks to Dr. Negaard and his amazing team for fixing both of my arms and enabling me to play golf again! I went from being completely sidelined to back in the winner’s circle!
Within two weeks of the procedure I had 70% pain relief. The PRP alone is a good resource. That tied with physical therapy made the difference for me.
The term “orthobiologics” is a combination of ortho, referring to the bones, joints, muscles, and tendons, and biologics, which, in this context, refers to substances that are naturally derived. The American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM) defines orthobiologics as the “use of biological substances to enhance biological healing of orthopedic injuries or alter the natural course of an orthopedic disease.” Orthobiologic treatments have not been authorized by the FDA and are considered experimental by the FDA.
Overall, orthobiologics provide a safe and effective reduction of pain and inflammation. Forté orthopedic specialists use PRP treatments (platelet rich plasma) made from your own blood to promote your body’s response to injuries. One of the biggest benefits continues to be that it’s a non-operative, minimally invasive treatment option with clinical studies supporting its use for multiple conditions. Other orthobiologic options include lipoaspirate (MFAT) and BMAC. In addition, there are other products (i.e. amnion, umbilical cord, etc) that are being studied in research trials that have the potential to be an additional option for patients. Forte is currently a site for multiple of these research trials.
There are a variety of acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions where a Forté orthopedic specialist can use orthobiologics for treatment, such as mild-to-moderate osteoarthritis and tendon problems.
