Can Shin Splints Cause Ankle Pain?

Yes. Shin splints and ankle pain often go hand in hand because of how the lower leg supports movement. When the muscles along the shin become overworked or inflamed, they can struggle to stabilize the ankle, leading to instability and discomfort. In some cases, excessive foot pronation—when your foot rolls too far inward—can put extra stress on both the shin and ankle, making the pain worse.

What Causes Shin Splints?

Shin splints happen when the muscles and bones in your lower leg are overworked, usually from repetitive movements or sudden increases in activity. This condition is especially common in runners, athletes and people who do a lot of high-impact exercise. While overuse is a big factor, other issues can also contribute to shin splints and even lead to ankle pain. Here are some of the most common causes:

  • Overuse and High-Impact Activities – Running, jumping and other repetitive movements can put too much strain on the shin muscles and surrounding tissues.
  • Improper Footwear – Worn-out or unsupportive shoes can affect the way your foot moves, increasing stress on your shins and ankles.
  • Flat Feet or High Arches – Foot structure plays a big role in how stress is distributed and imbalances can add extra strain to the lower leg.
  • Training Mistakes – Increasing your workout intensity, duration or frequency too quickly can overload your muscles and lead to shin splints.

Shin Splints Treatment and Prevention

If you're dealing with shin splints and ankle pain, a combination of rest, treatmentand prevention strategies can help, including:

  • RICE Method – Rest, ice, compression and elevation to reduce pain and swelling.
  • Physical Therapy – Strengthening and stretching exercises to improve stability and flexibility.
  • Proper Footwear & Orthotics – Supportive shoes or custom orthotics can help correct foot alignment and relieve strain.
  • Gradual Training Adjustments – Increasing activity levels slowly helps prevent overuse injuries.
  • Specialized Rehabilitation Programs – Professional rehabilitation services can provide tailored recovery plans for quick and targeted relief.
