Dr. Jonathan Smerek, a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in foot and ankle reconstruction, brings vast experience to his role as Forté’s president, including serving as a team physician in which he works as part of a highly collaborative group taking care of athletes. Dr. Smerek believes that, like an athletic team, each member of a medical group contributes to the overall success of the organization. His main priority as president is working with all team members to grow the practice and build out its centers of excellence in each specialty while continuing to be a go-to for orthopedic care in Central Indiana and beyond.
Dr. John McCarroll is a fellowship-trained, board-certified physician and a founding partner of Forté Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. After many years as an all-state football player for Zanesville High School, a competitor on the Ohio State baseball team, team physician, orthopedic consultant and avid golfer, Dr. McCarroll understood in his career that nothing is more frustrating than sitting on the sidelines with an injury. He devoted his career to getting players back in the game, whether the game was starting in a match-up between IU and one of its Big 10 foes, or comfortably sitting or cheering in the stands. As the father to four children and grandfather of four, Dr. McCarroll believes an important part of being a good doctor is the ability to see your patients as people — dads and moms, grandparents, sisters, and brothers, who all juggle demanding lifestyles and need to find time to pursue their passions, volunteer and play as a family at every opportunity. Dr. McCarroll retired from practice in 2021.
Dr. Arthur C. Rettig specialized in sports medicine and disorders of the upper extremities. Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, Dr. Rettig received his medical degree from Cornell University in 1967. He was an intern at San Francisco General Hospital in San Francisco, California, and served a second post-doctoral year at the University of California-Berkeley. His special areas of interest are the care and rehabilitation of injuries to the hand, wrist, elbow, and knee.
The practice of medicine is in the blood of the Rettig family. Dr. Rettig’s father was a physician and Dr. Rettig’s son, Lance, is also an orthopedist at Forté Sports Medicine and Orthopedics. As a former head team physician for the Indianapolis Colts, Dr. Rettig indulged his deep love for sports just about year-round. He is the former team physician to Indiana University basketball, IUPUI and was also a team physician to North Central High School. It is estimated that Dr. Rettig has been on the sidelines for more than 1,000 IUPUI competitions, 650 Colts games, and innumerable North Central games during his illustrious career. A lifelong sports fan, Dr. Rettig ranks the Colts winning the Super Bowl right up there with getting married and the birth of his two sons. Dr. Rettig retired from practice in 2021.
